Help your kids get their snow boots on, and take a walk outside to let them see and touch the snow. If you don’t have snow in your area, there are plenty of Winter books and movies to get the kids inspired.

Weekly Lesson Plan for “I’m a Snowflake” Poem

Here, you will find a Monday through Friday lesson plan to use with your “I’m a Snowflake” Winter Build a Poem.

If you don’t have a pocket chart, the kids can use table or floor space to build the poem and still have lots of fun!

Monday: Intro to Poem and Winter Theme

Activity: Introduce the “I’m a Snowflake” Build a Poem

• Read the poem together using shared reading. Point to each word as you read aloud.

• After reading it, sing it to the children (to the tune of “Frere Jacques or Where is Thumpkin”).

• Encourage kids to join in singing as you read it multiple times.

Activity: Introduce Snow Facts for Kids

• Start by asking the kids what they know about Winter or the Snow and record their answers on chart paper.

• Let them draw a journal page about with January Writing Prompts about snow and Wintertime.

Tuesday: Sight Word Hunts and Counting Mats

Activity: Use the pocket chart poem to do a letter/sight word scavenger hunt.

• Call out specific letters, sounds, or sight words (e.g., the, in) for kids to find and point to.

• Add the black and white version of “I’m a Snowflake” to the kids’ poetry notebooks.

• Let the kids use their favorite color to circle the focus sight words or letters on the poetry notebook version.

Activity: Introduce January Counting Mats

• Give the kids snow-like manipulatives to practicing counting, such as blue pom poms or snowflake mini erasers.

Wednesday: interactive poetry and Would You Rather

Activity: Assign roles (e.g. Pass out word cards to different children (in, the, here, there, and).

Have the kids stand up, and while you are reading the poem to the class, when the kids hear their word being read, they get to gently fall down like a snowflake..

Activity: As they sing and recite the poem together, let them twirl around like snowflakes.

Activity: Play a quick game of January Would You Rather.

Thursday: Find the Missing Words

Activity: Create a cloze activity with the pocket chart poem.

• Remove 3-5 words from the chart and place them at the bottom or on the table.

• Have kids figure out the missing words and place them back in the correct spots.

• Discuss why each word fits based on the rhyme, context, or meaning.

Activity: Read Aloud Snowmen at Night then do a free snowman craft.

Friday: Rebuild the Poem and Recite

Activity: Let students work independently or in pairs to rebuild the poem using the pocket chart.

• Provide all the word cards and challenge them to assemble the poem in the correct order.

• Once complete, have them recite it aloud to the class or a partner.

• Encourage kids to point to each word as they recite to reinforce tracking.

• Keep out as a center activity for the following week.
