What are Build a Poems?

A Build a Poem is a seasonal, themed, poem that comes with large print word cards.

The purpose of the Build a Poems are for the kids to arrange the word cards in an arrangement that reflects the season or nursery rhyme poem.

While designed for pocket chart use, teachers, homeschool parents, and reading tutors are coming up with alternative ways if no pocket chart is available.

For example, some teachers allow the kids to build the poem on a large table space. Whereas others allow the kids to work on a clean floor space.

You can also use magnetic tape to let the kids arrange the words on a white board. Whatever suits your learning space best!

Teach the kids the poem by first reading it aloud to them, then having them echo you line by line.

Finally, you and the kids recite it together.

Once they are familiar with the poem, let them work with peers or independently to build the poem with the word cards.
