The Origin of Mary Had a Little Lamb

This sweet story of Mary and her pet lamb came to existence in the nineteenth century. In 1830, Sarah Hale wrote this rhyme about a young girl who brought her lamb to school.

It is said this is a true story about a teacher, a little girl, and an incident of the lamb.

Sarah was once a teacher in a New Hampshire small school house. The pictures portray a one-room schoolhouse.

It is there that Sarah reportedly experienced the story of a girl bringing her pet lamb to school.

Telling this story is a great way to engage your young students in the following learning activities.

Mary Had a Little Lamb Original Poem Lyrics

Mary had a little lamb, it’s fleece was white as snow.

And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.

He followed her to school one day, that was against the rules.

It made the children laugh and play to see a lamb at school.
