Worksheets for Kids

Did you know addition worksheets can be engaging and fun for kids?  I know; some people feel worksheets for kids are not good.  But, I’m here to show you how keeping learning fun doesn’t have to be difficult and time consuming.

For as long as I’ve been teaching, I’ve heard debates surrounding the question: “Are worksheets good or bad?”.  Sure, solely resorting to worksheets to teach new skills is not ideal for early childhood development.

The keyword was “teach”.  Addition for kindergarten worksheets cannot teach new skills. Instead, worksheets for kids can be used as tools to reinforce and build upon learned skills.

Benefits of Worksheets

Based on my experience as a licensed early childhood educator, and Chi-De Lee’s article in the Journal of Education in Mathematics, Science, and Technology, some benefits of worksheets for kids include:

  • Worksheets help teachers monitor student progress.
  • Completing worksheets can be a good way for students to reflect on their own abilities.
  • “Worksheets can function as advance organizers, helping students to organize their observations and knowledge” (Lee, 2014)
  • Worksheets allow students to apply their skills and work independently.

I believe there needs to be a balance.  Teach and allow kids to learn through exploration.  Then, use worksheets to reinforce and assess the student’s progress.

Kindergarten Math Standards Common Core

Although some states do not follow the common core standards, such as Virginia, most states do apply to these learning guidelines.  School districts design their curriculum scope and sequence, or curriculum map, around the standards.  It is very likely, I will write more about that in the future.  For now, however, here is an overview of the standards for kindergarten math.

This is a general introduction of the math skills taught in kindergarten.  You can see how each standard is broken down into specific skills on the Common Core State Standards Initiative website:

Counting and Cardinality

  • Know number names and count sequence
  • Count to tell the number of objects
  • Compare numbers

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.  (This is the standard covered in your free addition worksheets for kindergarten below)

Number in Operations in Base Ten

  • Work with numbers 11-19 to gain foundations for place value

Measurement and Data

  • Describe and compare measurable attributes.
  • Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category.

Geometry

  • Identify and describe shapes.
  • Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes.
